The Art of Writing a Killer Resume: Tips from a Professional Recruiter

As a freelance writer, you know that your resume is one of the most essential tools in your arsenal. However, you might have found yourself struggling to fit everything that makes you an amazing writer onto one page. Fear not, because as a recruiter with 15 years of experience, I have come across numerous resumes that could benefit from a few tips to make them stand out from the pack.

Firstly, instead of obsessing over the length of your resume, focus on making it concise and relevant. As a general rule, resumes should not exceed two pages, but this doesn’t mean you should feel obligated to cut out all your accomplishments to fit in everything in that limit. Instead, take the time to craft a clear summary statement and skillset section that accurately reflects what makes you unique.

Secondly, don’t hesitate to get creative with your formatting. Maybe you worked on a project that was particularly impactful, or you have a unique set of skills that you want to highlight. Utilize bullet points, bolded headings, and underlined words to bring attention to your most impressive achievements. Remember, your resume should be a visually-pleasing document that showcases your abilities as a writer, so don’t be afraid to mix it up!

Marketing Your Writing Skills: Tips for Crafting a Winning LinkedIn Profile

In today’s job market, having a well-crafted LinkedIn profile can make all the difference in securing a new freelance writing gig. As a former recruiter with extensive experience in marketing and advertising, I have seen countless profiles that had the potential to be great, but fell short in a few key areas. Here are a few tips to make sure your profile stands out from the crowd:

First and foremost, ensure that your profile photo is professional and highlights your personal brand as a writer. Avoid using overly casual images or pictures that don’t accurately reflect your style. Next, craft a clear and compelling headline that showcases your strengths in one sentence or less. This could include your years of experience, writing niches, or any notable accomplishments you have achieved.

Finally, be sure to list out your past experiences in a way that highlights your writing abilities. Don’t simply list out job titles, but instead focus on your specific achievements in each role. If you have written articles or created content, be sure to link to these examples and include any relevant metrics, such as views or engagement rates. By following these tips, you can be sure that your LinkedIn profile is working for you and marketing your skills as a freelance writer effectively.
