Authority and Approachability: Balancing the Two for Freelancers

Share Article

As a freelancer, you want to make sure that you are seen as both authoritative and approachable. If you don’t come off as knowledgeable enough, your clients won’t trust you with their project. But if you come off too authoritative, they might be intimidated by your expertise. So how do you strike the perfect balance between authority and approachability? Read on to find out!

Know When to Use Each

The key to balancing authority and approachability is knowing when it is appropriate to use each. In most cases, being an expert in your field will gain more respect than being overly friendly or casual with your clients. However, there are times when letting your personality shine through can help develop a more trusting relationship with clients.

Show Off Your Knowledge

When talking to potential clients, be sure to show off your knowledge of the topic at hand without coming off as condescending or intimidating. Letting them know that you have done the research can go a long way in gaining their trust and respect. This also gives them confidence that they are hiring someone who is truly an expert in their field. Showing off your knowledge doesn’t mean talking over your client—ask questions and actively listen to what they have to say in order to make sure that everyone is on the same page about the project goals.

Be Personable

At the same time, don’t forget to be personable with clients—you want them to feel like they are working with someone who understands them on a personal level rather than just another contractor who is there for the job. Showing that you care about their project and not just looking for a paycheck will go a long way in building trust between yourself and the client. Be honest about any other projects that may be taking up some of your time or if there are any potential delays due to circumstances outside of your control so that there won’t be any surprises down the line.

🍩 Just the Sprinkles

Striking the perfect balance between being an expert in your field while still remaining personable can seem like an impossible task at times, but it doesn’t have to be! By showing off your knowledge without coming across as condescending or intimidating, while still making sure to maintain a personal connection with clients, you can become a successful freelancer who both commands respect from clients while also being seen as trustworthy and approachable at the same time! Good luck!
